Pets Need Dental Care Too!

Most people are unaware of the enormous role that oral hygiene plays in the general health of their pets. Dental disease is the number one health problem in dogs and cats over the age of five. It is the most commonly encountered disease in veterinary practice, and probably a major contributor to sickness and death in geriatric pets. We know that untreated dental problems lead to heart disease, kidney and liver dysfunction, generalized infections, pain, difficulty eating and early death. Some breeds are more likely to develop gingivitis and periodontal disease at an early age. This would include all of the toy breeds of dogs, Burmese, Persian and other exotic cat breeds.

BEFORE a dental cleaning

Dogs and cats should have their teeth and gums evaluated on an annual basis as adults. Most dogs and cats require yearly professional cleaning after the age of five. Daily cleaning at home can lengthen the time between dentals by the veterinarian, but do not take the place of a complete exam and cleaning under sedation. The annual dental exam is an excellent opportunity for the veterinarian to perform a thorough examination of the mouth, throat, teeth and gums. Many times, pet owners avoid cleanings due to fears concerning sedation. In reality, the health threat posed by periodontal disease far outweighs the minimal risks of sedating the pet.

AFTER a dental cleaning

We offer complete dental prophylaxis, including ultrasonic cleaning, subgingival irrigation with anti-bacterial solution, fluoride treatment, and extractions (if needed). Referrals will be given for root canals and orthodontics, if necessary. Our dental procedures are performed under i.v. sedation with isoflurane gas anesthesia.
