Surgery: At AMCR, we offer a wide range of both elective and non-elective surgeries. Elective surgeries include spays, neuters, declaws, dewclaw removals and ear trims. Non-elective surgeries refer to those type of surgeries that are necessary to improve or sustain good quality of life.
Some examples of non-elective surgeries would be: Orthopedic surgery for fracture repair/ stabilization Orthopedic surgery for ruptured or torn cruciate ligaments ("ACL's") of the knee joint Gastrointestinal surgery for stomach bloat and volvulus Gastrointestinal surgery for foreign body ingestion causing blockage of the intestinal tract General surgery to remove tumors, cysts, and growths of skin or internal organs Surgery to remove bladder stones Surgery to repair hernias
Pain Control and Patient Comfort Patient comfort is one of our top priorities. We provide narcotic pain control medication to keep your pet as comfortable as possible, both immediately prior to, and after surgery. We also use warm water circulating heated pads on our padded surgery tables to keep our patients warm during surgery.
Safety and Monitoring Anesthetic safety is also a top priority of ours and all patients are monitored during surgery for EKG abnormalities, blood oxygen levels, and respiratory rate. We use the safest anesthetic products available; many are the same products used in humans.
Pre-Anesthetic Tests We strongly believe in mandatory pre-operative lab work to rule out any pre-existing problems prior to anesthesia and surgery.
Most surgery patients are kept overnight and discharged the following day. This policy insures your pet's activity will be restricted for the first 24 hours following surgery, and also allows the doctors to evaluate vital signs and the surgical incision prior to discharge. Patients undergoing very minor procedures may be discharged the same day of surgery, at the doctors discretion.
