FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
**Salmonella found in contaminated beef treats** The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted a warning on its websitethis week about potential contamination of Merrick Beef Filet Squares for dogs. The product is distributed by Merrick Pet Care, and has a package date of “Best By 111911,” according to the agency.
The FDA found Salmonella in the treats during a routine test in December. A follow-up test discovered “deficiencies in the packaging and manufacturing processes.” No official recall has been announced, and the FDA says no illnesses have been reported from the products. However, consumers are being advised not to handle these products or feed them to their pets. People who have Merrick Beef Filet Squares with the above package date should throw them away immediately, the FDA says.
**Canine Flu** Canine influenza is a newly emerging infectious disease caused by a “flu” virus. This highly contagious strain, called H3N8 is able to cause respiratory illness that is usually mild but can become quite serious in some dogs. In about 20% of the cases, more severe signs will occur, such as a high fever and pneumonia. A small number of dogs infected with the virus have died from complications associated with the disease.
Recently, a new canine influenza vaccine-the first of its kind-was approved for use in the US. Canine Influenza Vaccine, H3N8 from Intervet/Schering Plough Animal Health has been clinically proven to significantly reduce the severity of the influenza and the length of time that a dog is sick. The initial vaccine requires 2 doses, 2-4 weeks apart, followed by annual revaccination.
Dogs at increased risk are those that: Come from a shelter, rescue center, kennel or pet store. Board or go to doggie daycare. Attend group training or dog kindergarten. Visit a groomer, dog parks, or engage with other dogs on walks. Enter dog events. Come into contact with other dogs in the waiting room at the veterinary clinic.
If you would like to get your dog vaccinated or find out more about this disease please contact our office or ask one of our staff members during your next visit.
